With its story beginning in Orléans in 2014 and blossoming anew in La Rochelle from 2020, Un Piano dans la Théière is the passion project of Violaine – a creator, chef, and dreamer. Inspired by literary greats like Jane Austen, George Eliot, and the warmth of Pagnol and Daudet, she’s created a space where fantasy and flavour meet. From its whimsical decor to its unforgettable cakes, this cosy café proves that vegan food in La Rochelle can be both delicious and dreamy. Finding Vegan Food in La Rochelle Can Be Tricky
La Rochelle has many beautiful eateries, but vegan food in La Rochelle is surprisingly limited. That’s why discovering Un Piano dans la Théière felt like finding a hidden gem.

Whether you’re travelling or local, Un Piano dans la Théière is a must-visit for anyone searching for vegan food in La Rochelle that’s full of flavour and heart.
📍 Finding Magic on Rue Bletterie
We nearly walked past it. Tucked into a cobbled street just moments from La Rochelle’s vibrant harbour, Un Piano dans la Théière doesn’t shout about its vegan credentials from the outside. And that’s part of the magic. Mention the word vegan and many people will turn their nose up and go elsewhere, subtly avoiding mentioning this means vegan patisseries’ with amazing plant based delicacies in France are full. It doesn’t scream vegan – instead, it invites you in gently.

A creative Vegan Café
You won’t just eat here – you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a Jane Austen novel with plant-based cake in hand.
As soon as we stepped inside, we were transported. Imagine if Beatrix Potter and Mary Poppins designed a tea room together: floral wallpaper, delicate china, vintage books, and an abundance of charm. This isn’t just a café – it’s a setting. A mood. A whole atmosphere wrapped in comfort and curiosity.

🍰 A Dream for Vegan Tastebuds
We were thrilled to find somewhere vegan in La Rochelle – the options in the area were few and far between. Despite not being outwardly advertised as a vegan café, Un Piano dans la Théière is exactly that – a plant-based gem, lovingly crafted.
We asked for recommendations from their sweet selection and were offered two cakes with fun names: the Colette and the Edward. One fruity, one chocolaty. Honestly? They were divine.
🫖 The Colette Cake
Delicate, balanced, and almost too pretty to eat, the Colette was a true showstopper. Its rose-shaped design sat beautifully atop a light, vibrant-pink sponge, encircled by a ring of finely ground pistachio. The flavours were just as graceful as the presentation – soft rose, nutty pistachio, and a gentle hint of raspberry layered together with cream above a raspberry jelly in perfect harmony. Light, floral, and not overly sweet, it would be the perfect companion to a pot of herbal tea. The kind of cake you’d imagine being served in a sunlit drawing room while reading Austen – elegant, refined, and quietly unforgettable.

I spotted this oh-so-pretty cake as soon as we walked in, and am so keen to try and recreate the Colette at home – it was the perfect cake to start. Lightly, fresh and gently sweet with such a striking design.

🍫 The Edward Cake
Rich, bold, and unashamedly chocolatey, Edward came second – just as the staff recommended, saving the strongest flavours for last. Think chocolate meets velvety banana and just the right touch of peanut for a beautifully balanced finish. It was everything you want from a vegan dessert: utterly indulgent and flavourful without being overpowering. Decadent but not too heavy, it delivered all the satisfaction of a classic dessert with the creativity and finesse you’d hope for in a standout vegan treat.
The Colette and Edward cakes are perfect examples of why Un Piano dans la Théière is a standout for vegan food in La Rochelle – both were bursting with flavour and beautifully presented.

A Place That Feels Like Poetry
From the mismatched teacups to the fairy lights, everything here feels intentional – yet delightfully relaxed. You don’t feel rushed and the friendly staff complete this experience. It is a pause from the busy world, a chapter break where you can breathe. And you feel that – in the presentation of the dishes, in the music, in the handwritten signs and delicate details that adorn the space.
The team are warm, welcoming, and full of gentle energy. You can tell they believe in the space, the food, and what they’re creating.
About Violaine – The Vision Behind the Teapot
Violaine isn’t just a chef – she’s a storyteller. The founder of France’s first gourmet vegan/vegetarian tearoom and restaurant, she started her culinary journey in Orléans in 2014 before moving to La Rochelle in 2020 to continue the adventure.

Her cooking philosophy is rooted in vitality, simplicity, and wellness. It’s not just about what’s on the plate – it’s about how it makes you feel. Her approach has redefined what vegan food in La Rochelle can look and taste like. Her dishes are rich in plant-based goodness, but even richer in soul.
Inspired by classic authors and nostalgic French storytellers, Violaine infuses Un Piano dans la Théière with a gentle literary charm. You can feel the influence of Jane Austen in the elegant presentation, the wit of George Eliot in the detail, and the cosy storytelling of Daudet in the atmosphere.

Outdoor Seating and Daydreaming
We sat outside during our visit to Un Piano dans la Théière, and it couldn’t have been more perfect – tucked away on Rue Bletterie, with just enough passing foot traffic for a bit of people-watching, yet peaceful enough to feel like a quiet escape.

The location offers the best of both: central convenience and hidden-away calm. Whether you’re perched outside reading or soaking up La Rochelle’s sunshine or cosy indoors among vintage teapots and twinkling lights, it’s one of the most peaceful spots to enjoy vegan food in La Rochelle.

Travel Tip: Vegan Food in La Rochelle
La Rochelle isn’t the most vegan-friendly city – so stumbling upon Un Piano dans la Théière felt like finding treasure. If you’re plant-based or just curious about vegan food, this is your spot.
It’s worth noting that while many French cafés and brasseries are heavy on dairy and meat, this little tearoom goes against the grain in the most beautiful way. You won’t find faux meats or overly processed dishes here – just thoughtful, nourishing, flavourful food made with care.
See It For Yourself
Photos don’t always do it justice, but I’ve shared a few snapshots below of the cakes we tried. Look out for the Colette – softly pink, with a dreamy texture – and the Edward, decadently chocolatey and topped with delicate detail. Presentation here is an art in itself.
Both were stunning – both in taste and in appearance.
