Where to Find the Best Vegan Pastries in Bordeaux: Our Visit to Land & Monkeys

One of our favourite things about travelling is sampling the local food—especially when we can find plant-based versions of classic dishes. So, when our road trip through France brought us to Bordeaux, we made it our mission to track down the vegan pastries in Bordeaux. As anyone who follows a plant-based diet will know, French patisserie isn’t exactly famous for its dairy-free options. That’s why discovering Land & Monkeys, a fully vegan bakery in the heart of Bordeaux, felt like such a win.

If you’re searching for vegan pastries in Bordeaux, this is the blog post for you. We’ll take you through what we ordered, what we loved, and why this stylish little bakery, full of vegan pastries in Bordeaux should definitely be on your itinerary.

Finding Vegan Food in Bordeaux

Bordeaux is a city steeped in history, wine, and – thankfully – an emerging vegan food scene. While not as overtly plant-based as places like Berlin or London, there are some brilliant finds if you know where to look. Bordeaux has a growing plant-based food scene, but it still requires a bit of digging—especially when you’re craving something sweet. That’s what made finding vegan pastries in Bordeaux such a thrill. Rather than settling for fruit or toast, we found warm, flaky, beautifully made treats at Land & Monkeys.

It took quite a bit of searching (and a fair few Google Maps saves!), before we stumbled upon Land & Monkeys. It had excellent reviews, a completely vegan menu, and, judging by the photos, some seriously impressive croissants.

We decided we had to make it our first stop of the day.

First Impressions of Land & Monkeys – Vegan pastries in Bordeaux

Tucked away just a short walk from Bordeaux Cathedral, Land & Monkeys is a clean, modern space with a stylish feel. Minimalist interiors, warm lighting, and the scent of fresh-baked pastries filled the air. The glass counter was packed with a mouth-watering array of viennoiseries, tarts, cakes and savoury bakes—all 100% vegan.

It’s the kind of place that immediately makes you smile—especially when you realise you can have everything on offer. I am not great at making decisions so it took a while as I am not used to having so many delicious vegan options. We’d read a few reviews online recommending it as one of the best (and only) places to find vegan pastries in Bordeaux, so expectations were high.

Our Vegan Pastry Haul

For breakfast the next day, we both chose a croissant and a pain au chocolat. We also picked up a chocolate babka to share the next morning with coffee. All three were absolute highlights of our road trip — and honestly it was so wonderful to be able to eat some of the vegan pastries in Bordeaux.

The croissants were buttery, crisp on the outside and delicately layered inside. You’d never guess they were dairy-free. The pain au chocolat had a lovely dark chocolate centre wrapped in soft, flaky pastry. The croissants had that classic French flakiness and buttery aroma, while the pain au chocolat was rich in all the right ways. It’s rare to find vegan options in France at all, and these vegan pastries in Bordeaux hit the mark for texture and taste, and delivered in spades. And the babka? Soft, swirled, chocolatey perfection. We actually regretted not buying two.

It’s worth noting that these pastries were served warm, fresh from the oven, which definitely enhances the experience. We enjoyed them right outside in the early sun, feeling thoroughly smug about our breakfast choices.

A Midday Treat by the Cathedral

During our visit, we picked up some patisserie-style desserts to enjoy straight away, as well as our bag of selected breakfast items to save for the next morning. We chose two patisserie-style desserts to enjoy as an afternoon treat: a mango cheesecake and a strawberry tart.

With our carefully boxed pastries in hand, we wandered over to Bordeaux Cathedral and sat on the stone steps in the sunshine. It was a lovely moment—people watching, bell chimes echoing in the background, and two very pretty vegan desserts to sample.

The mango cheesecake was smooth, creamy, and subtly tropical. The strawberry tart had a crisp pastry base topped with vanilla custard and glossy fresh strawberries. They were light, flavourful, and felt like a luxury. While we didn’t find these patisserie items quite as exceptional as the morning pastries, (the mango cheesecake base was far too thick and hard to cut), they were still well worth trying and beautifully presented.

While the patisserie items weren’t quite as mind-blowing as the croissants and babka, they were still a beautiful example of how creative vegan pastries in Bordeaux can be. It felt luxurious to sit in a historic city with entirely plant-based French desserts.

More Than Just Pastries

Although our focus was on sweet treats, it’s worth noting that Land & Monkeys offers a much broader menu. Land & Monkeys offers more than just vegan pastries in Bordeaux—you’ll also find sandwiches, savoury bakes, artisan breads and even vegan quiches. Everything is thoughtfully made and beautifully displayed, using high-quality ingredients with sustainability in mind. Think vegan sandwiches, breads, quiches, cookies, and even seasonal specials. Everything is freshly made, entirely plant-based, and prepared with care.

The bakery chain prides itself on sustainability too. All packaging is recyclable or compostable, and their menu is designed to drastically reduce environmental impact compared to traditional patisseries. Their goal is simple: to make it easy (and delicious) to choose plant-based.

If you’re looking for a spot that caters brilliantly to conscious eaters while still serving up traditional French flavours, this is it.

Why It’s Worth a Visit – Vegan Pastries in Bordeaux

As vegans travelling through France, we’ve often had to settle for making food in the van as there were so few vegan or vegetarian options. So discovering somewhere that celebrates plant-based food, rather than simply tolerating it, felt refreshing and honestly quite special.

Land & Monkeys is a space where being vegan doesn’t feel like a compromise. You get to experience the joy of choice—the same as anyone else walking into a bakery in France. You’re not asking what’s “accidentally vegan”; you’re picking from a menu made for you.

Their pastries aren’t just good for vegan food—they’re just really good food, full stop. So if you’re heading to the region and wondering where to find vegan pastries in Bordeaux, this is our number one recommendation.
